Joshua Petker at Corey Helford Gallery

PETKER-PR1.jpg

Joshua Petker's glorious colors and dreamy images are coming to Los Angeles again, to the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City, for his new show "Between Butterflies."

"Petker’s new series of works displays a thematic evolution, creating narratives about change and renewal, while combining his signature style of figurative work with unique color fields following in, and expanding upon, the American tradition of beautiful yet angry abstract art. Drawing inspiration from fashion and beauty, Petker’s painted muses are catalysts of change and icons of reinvention, adorned in gold and neon accents.

Petker explains, 'I can create a new reality for this person or image. I can put them in a new context, or in new colors. But that’s what we all do with fashion. Look at Lady Gaga or more interestingly the people who admire her. She creates new identities for herself. New contexts. Humans yearn to do this, - create meaning and context - and we admire those that do this visually. This show explores my interest in the fleeting identities based on fashion and beauty, the idea that a look, a style, or fame itself can be an identity with purpose. Or, for others of a religious nature, how their belief in what happens after life constructs their identity and purpose while alive.'"

Opening Reception Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 7‑10pm
On View April 17 - May 5, 2010
8522 Washington Boulevard
Culver City, CA 90232

New Tim Biskup Prints!!

05F7490C-3D14-443D-8931-49FD1F1FDCCB.jpg

Okay, this doesn't happen often, so pay attention. Tim Biskup has just released a series of limited prints, and they are available now. First, some info:

"Over the last few years Tim Biskup’s work has evolved rapidly. One of the key elements in his recent paintings is the presence of “faceted” images. Biskup has explained that the style grew out of visual distortions that he experienced when he had migraine headaches. Amazingly, as the style developed the migraines subsided! This addition to the artist’s visual lexicon was captured in his epic 72-color serigraph print “Asylum #4” from 2008, but the costly production process took the price of the print out of range for most casual collectors. With this new series of digital offset prints the price comes down to earth. The six images were culled from an assortment of paintings dating back to early 2008. The artist painstakingly recreated each image as a vector graphic so the technical quality is precise."

And here are the deets:

Five of the six prints from the series are available individually.
Each is a signed and numbered limited edition of 66.
The sixth print is limited to only 33 and is included free as part of the complete set.

Each print individually is $100, while the ultra-limited set is a steal at $500.

Get 'em now. These never last.

Kristen Schiele at Sloan Fine Art

9168EB1D-5741-4B49-82C4-57D326327B4F.jpg

Kristen Schiele makes her way back to Sloan Fine Art this month for a command performance, a new solo show entitled Electra.

"With her new body of work Elektra, Kristen Schiele continues her celebration of strong female characters and deconstruction of architectural settings. Utilizing a variety of techniques including silkscreen, painting and ink transfers, Schiele achieves a disjointed, densely layered effect, creating paintings that are at once timeless, nostalgic, fierce and contemporary. Compositions are cut apart, x-rayed and reassembled. Stages are set and cast with subjects straight from classic pulp novel and fashion magazine covers. As in her inspiration, B movie and classic horror films, the objects, patterns, costumes and characters are mythological, kitsch symbols. The final works are designed and decorated environments in which the “bad girl” clearly holds all the cards - if not a knife."

Elektra runs from April 21 to May 15, 2010
Opening reception: Wednesday, April 21st, 6 to 8 pm

Keep watching the Sloan Fine Art website for updates.

Edwin Ushiro Show at Sloan Fine Arts

ADrop.jpg

How much do I envy New Yorkers right now? LA-based artist Edwin Ushiro's new solo show is opening in New York's wonderful Sloan Fine Art on March 24th, and it's full of Mr. Ushiro's typical eye-popping gorgeousness.

"The content of Edwin Ushiro’s work is as richly layered as the works themselves. Influenced by the memories and folklore of his childhood in Hawaii and with nods to Japanese Anime, he creates his own mythology populated with modern characters and contemporary references. With 'At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned Home,' Ushiro utilizes his technique of layering paint, ink, graphite, varnish and iron transfers on vinyl sheets to create romantic, luminescent works that focus on the mystery, and histories, held by abandoned and forgotten places."

Alexandros Vasmoulakis at LeBasse Projects

av4.jpg

"Is Everybody Happy?", a solo exhibition by Alexandros Vasmoulakis
at Lebasse Projects
March 20th – April 17th, 2010
Opening reception: Saturday, March 20th, 7pm-10pm

"Alexandros Vasmoulakis is mostly known by his work in the streets of Athens, as he has painted on and embellished various buildings across the city of Athens, Greece and is expected to do the same here in Los Angeles. While recognized for his street work, Vasmoulakis’ paintings are beginning to reflect the maturity of his work as an artist.

His works’ main theme is the psychology of his figures. The struggle, the element of the conflict dominates in the pairs of his figures and in each character separately. With the perceptive analysis of his characters Vasmoulakis achieves through his work, he persuades us that he has penetrated into their mentality by holding a role of a competent and gifted anatomist, of an expressive soul searcher."
