Secret Elizabeth McGrath Preview!!!
Shh... Don't tell anyone, but PopDrawer's spies have reported back with a first look at Elizabeth McGrath's upcoming show at Sloan Fine Art. This is the only place you can see the newest genius of Liz on display (that's right, we're talking to you Boing Boing).
The show, Shadowless Summer, opens on the ides of April (the 15th), and the dozen or so sculptures are eye-popping, as usual. PopDrawer LOVES Liz McGrath, and her work continues to stun us. Take a peek at these awesome examples.
And if that isn't enough, Alix Sloan has lined one of PopDrawer's favorite emerging artists, Tasha Kusama, for the project room. We'll try to sneak a preview of Ms. Kusama's work if we can get our spycams into the project room.
Meanwhile, enjoy!

Liz McGrath Works Available!
Okay, coming down from the election high. First post since last week. Trying to get back in the swing of things. No idea how successful we'll be. But gotta to start somewhere. So, in a brief follow-up to a post from a few weeks ago, we alert you to the availability of some new pieces by Liz McGrath that you can buy in advance of the undoubtedly rebounding economy that will be ushered in with some new American blood. (Alright, it might not happen right away, but it's time to think about investing in your future! Art is the only stable investment we own after the recent market crash).
From Liz McGrath's stupendous Barcelona-based "Tears of the Crocodile" show at Iguapop Gallery comes a small group of still available works for purchase. Here are just a few, but you can go to the full catalog and take a look. You just might get lucky.

Scott Musgrove's Wild Kingdom
1917, Cottingly, England. Cousins Elsie Wright, 16, and Frances Griffiths, 10 offer absolute proof of the existence of fairies with actual photos of what will come to be called the Cottingly Fairies. Yet the skeptical cynical world attacks the poor girls, calling the photos fakes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, is implicated in the supposed hoax.
Fast forward to 1967. Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin capture Bigfoot on film. And still some doubters refuse to believe their own eyes, crying hoax.
Thank goodness for Scott Musgrove, who since the 1990s has taken it upon himself to "catalog and depict the heretofore unknown and now-extinct Animal and Plant species of Early North America." [Author unknown. P. 1, Email source, 05/06/08, Billy Shire Fine Arts, info@billyshirefinearts.com]. Professor Musgrove's new show at Billy Shire Fine Arts, which opens Saturday May 10th at 7 PM, is his latest collection of amazing flora and fauna, including vivid depictions of the Long Necked Lotus Loris, the Hydrophiidus Alveus, and the Lepus Pilosus, among others.
For a fascinating and educational visit for both adults and children, don't miss Scott Musgrove at Billy Shire Fine Arts this weekend through June 4th. And while you're there, be sure to see the never-before-released collection of precious gems from Elizabeth McGrath.

Liz McGrath at Billy Shire Fine Arts
Wow. Liz McGrath has a new show of watercolors called "The Secret Party" opening at Billy Shire Fine Arts next week (May 10th), and I have here a bit of a sneak preview. Wow. From the creature-topped frames to the sweet/gothic images on the canvases, this show is delightful. I don't know if Ms. McGrath has any intentions of writing a children's book, but the character's she has created seem to be screaming for a story of their own.
The pieces start at $250, and if you are interested in purchasing you can contact the wonderful Annie Adjchavanich at annieadj@gmail.com. These will go like wildfire, no question. Good luck!

Take us to Chicago!!
We envy you if you live in or near Chi-town this Saturday night, the 26th. That's because L.A.'s premier gallery for Pop Surrealism, Billy Shire Fine Arts, is going on tour and joining one of Chicago's best, DvA Gallery, for a joint group show. And what a show! Here's a sampling: Liz McGrath, Glenn Barr, Ana Bagayan, Dave Cooper, Daniel Martin Diaz. And they'll all be in attendance! The list of other artists in the show who won't be making it include Shag, Chris Mars, Gary Taxali, and a dozen more. Want to see the works for sale? Well you've come to the right place. Take a gander. Some of these have already sold, so hurry!
If that weren't enough, there will also be a book, toy and merchandise signing by the artists in attendance. But good news -- you don't have to be present to get some swag. You can call the gallery (773-871-4382) and ask what's available (limited edition books, toys, clothing) and pre-order whatever you want. They will have it personalized and sent to you, wherever you may reside.

Artcotic - Offering Fine Art T-Shirts in Limited Editions!
Do you wear your heart on your sleeve? How about wearing your taste on your chest? In recent years t-shirts designed by successful artists have been easier and easier to find (case in point: Shepard Fairey's excellent, high-quality OBEY line of clothing). Now website Artcotic makes it even easier.
Artcotic offers a line of t-shirts featuring artists such as Elizabeth McGrath, Dalek, and Frank Kozik. The t-shirts are in the $25-$30 range and are generally limited to an edition of 250 or 500. This way you won't show up to the same fetish ball sporting the same t-shirt and tattoos as the other dude. How embarrassing...

Sloan Fine Art opens in NY with amazing group show
In the 1990s, one gallery in America influenced and nurtured the modern pop art world probably more than any other -- La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles. Its owner, Billy Shire, has been cited again and again as the godfather of the pop surrealism or lowbrow art movements. If Billy hire is the godfather, then the consigliere would certainly be Alix Sloan.
Alix was the director of La Luz de Jesus in the early 90s, and was a writer on the subject of art in the latter half of the 90s. In 2001 she became a private art dealer, consultant and curator and sold hundreds of works of art as well as managing and curating a number of shows, fine art monographs, lecture tours, exhibitions, publications and events. And in 2005, Alix helped Billy Shire launch his Billy Shire Fine Arts, the premier gallery of its kind. Today she is opening her own eponymous gallery in New York, and it is sure to be the influence in this decade that La Luz de Jesus was in the last, especially if the two part group show is any indication.
Alix has relationships with many of the most important and influential artists working today, and because of that her first group show is a collection of powerhouses. The first part, opening today, features works by Clayton Brothers, Vince Contarino, Nicholas Cope, Elizabeth McGrath,
Kristen Schiele, Aaron Smith and Eric White, while part two will be comprised of works by Andrea Aversa, Jud Bergeron, Marion Peck, Jean-Pierre Roy, Mark Ryden and Joe Sorren. Click here to see the works in part one. We’ve posted a few of the works here.
Every serious collector or anyone interesting in starting or expanding their collection (or anyone who just wants to see some seriously amazing art) needs to visit Sloan Fine Art’s website early and often.
