Clowns.
BRbrbrbrbrhhh...
(That was supposed to be the sound of a shiver.)
Point being, they're scary. And yet for some reason Corey Helford Gallery has decided to have whole show of those creepy, painted serial-killers. They've invited an A-list of amazing artists to paint their own interpretations (and some of them are actually not oogie) and are now in the process of hanging them in the gallery.
The aptly-named show, CLOWNS!, opens Saturday November 15th, from 7-10 PM. Artists include Gary Baseman, Shag, Dave Kinsey, Tokidoki, Audrey Kawasaki, Gary Taxali, Natalia Fabia, Paul Frank, Buff Monster, Joe Ledbetter, Andrew Brandou, D*Face, Colin Christian, Brandi Milne, Carlos Ramos, Donovan Crosby, Anthony Ausgang, Travis Louie, J. Otto Siebold, and lots of others. What a line-up!
Hope to see you there. I'll be the one standing outside peering in the windows.

Hopefully we will post more images in PART 2 soon.

Boing Boing has a post about the upcoming Baby Tattooville ultimate art fanboy/fangirl event. It costs a pretty penny, but you get to spend a weekend at famous funky Mission Inn in Riverside, CA, hang with some of th every best artists, and walk away with lots of great art and swag. This year's participants include Ana Bagayan, Glenn Barr, Dave Cooper, Bob Dob, Joe Ledbetter, Brandi Milne, Daniel Peacock, Shag, Amy Sol, Michael Whelan, and potentially a special guest artist or two.
Without the time constraints of a typical personal appearance, or the crowd control issues of a standing-room-only event, artists and collectors will have a weekend-long opportunity to discuss and explore their mutual interests. Original work will be created and celebrated around-the-clock. No one will leave empty handed. Only 18 out of 50 event packages are still available, and they are selling fast.
Are you a true fan? Only 13 spots left!

Boing Boing has a nice post about the 10th Anniversary of the excellent Seattle Gallery Roq La Rue, owned by Pop Surrealism author Kristen Anderson. And The Roq La Rue blog has an online preview. Artists include Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr, Shag, Marion Peck, Liz McGrath, Travis Louie, Lisa Petrucci, Scott Musgrove, Femke Hiemstra, Ronald Kurniawan, and a number of other greats. It's a great show at a great gallery.

Mike at Sketchypad reports on a special preview showing of the new documentary about the lowbrow movement called New Brow. The list of artists featured in the film is a who's who of Pop Surrealism: Mark Ryden, Robert Williams, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Glenn Barr, Camille Rose Garcia, Shephard Fairey, Shag, Mars-1, Todd Schorr, Isabell Samaras, and more.
If you live in the Monterey, CA area, you can see it on June 27th. An art show joins the screening. If you go, let us know!

Palm Springs goes tiki wild this weekend (as it does every year at this time with the annual Tiki Caliente tropical madness), but just as significantly with M Modern Gallery's 5th Anniversary Tiki Exhibit. And the lineup is tiki-rific! (Please forgive us for that).
The glorious Amy Crehore, Shag, Anthony Ausgang, Chris Reccardi & Lynne Naylor (long-time PopDrawer faves), Miles Thompson (we have one of his tiki originals on our wall as we write this), Derek Yaniger, Naoto Hattori, The Pizz, and many many more. Yowza!
And if that weren't enough, everything else in the gallery (excluding the tiki show and the solo shows of Derek Yaniger and Lyle Motley) will be ON SALE. As usual, the gallery will most likely sell the works online, so be sure to check in all week to see the works as soon as they go online.

We envy you if you live in or near Chi-town this Saturday night, the 26th. That's because L.A.'s premier gallery for Pop Surrealism, Billy Shire Fine Arts, is going on tour and joining one of Chicago's best, DvA Gallery, for a joint group show. And what a show! Here's a sampling: Liz McGrath, Glenn Barr, Ana Bagayan, Dave Cooper, Daniel Martin Diaz. And they'll all be in attendance! The list of other artists in the show who won't be making it include Shag, Chris Mars, Gary Taxali, and a dozen more. Want to see the works for sale? Well you've come to the right place. Take a gander. Some of these have already sold, so hurry!
If that weren't enough, there will also be a book, toy and merchandise signing by the artists in attendance. But good news -- you don't have to be present to get some swag. You can call the gallery (773-871-4382) and ask what's available (limited edition books, toys, clothing) and pre-order whatever you want. They will have it personalized and sent to you, wherever you may reside.
